asked the Minister for Health the number of mentally and physically handicapped children at present on the waiting list for places in special institutions or schools in the case of each health authority in the country; and the number of years which each such child has been on the waiting list.

The information asked for by the Deputy is shown in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

asked the Minister for Health how many places were available in special homes for mentally handicapped children at 31st December in each of the years 1948, 1951, 1954, 1957, 1960 and 1963.

The number of beds available in the special institutions for the mentally handicapped on 31st December of each of the years in question was as follows:—

A further 60 beds have been provided since 31st December, 1963 and steps have already been taken which will have the effect of adding almost 700 extra beds to the total.
