Vol. 213 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Employment Schemes.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance what employment relief schemes he has in mind for the townlands in North Kerry; if he will indicate the areas in question; whether he is aware that a large number of men both single and married have not got a single day's employment on any public works for over five years; and if, in the circumstances, he will substantially increase the grants for the areas in question in order to provide much needed employment for the Christmas season.

The programme of minor employment schemes to be carried out this winter in the areas of North Kerry which qualified for grants is set out in detail, including the townlands in which the works are situated, in the list of schemes I sent to the Deputy, and to the other Deputies for the constituency, on 2nd November, 1964.

Unskilled labourers on these employment schemes must be recruited through the local offices of the Department of Social Welfare, and preference is given to the most necessitous persons registered as unemployed, if they are otherwise suitable. It was never contemplated that these employment relief schemes should provide work for every single and married man throughout the country.

All the money available for employment schemes this winter has already been allocated, and North Kerry has received its proportionate share.
