Vol. 213 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Brickey Drainage Scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the fact that the starting date for the Brickey Drainage Scheme given in a reply of 3rd November has passed, he will now state when he expects the scheme to commence.

All the preliminary arrangements have been made for work on this scheme and the contractor has been instructed to proceed. I am advised that, were it not for floods in the river, work would have been commenced already and that the contractor intends to start next week.

In view of the fact that the previous promise that work would start last month has not been honoured, will the Parliamentary Secretary endeavour to see that this scheme will commence because a large number of farmers in the area are awaiting completion of the scheme so that they can avail of Government grants to improve their land? The scheme has been delayed. Last April was the closing date for the contract. In those circumstances, will the Parliamentary Secretary endeavour to secure that the scheme will be completed as quickly as possible?

I will, indeed, yes.
