Vol. 213 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Investment in Fishing Industry.

39.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the need for heavy capital investment in the fishing industry; and if he has made any plans to meet this necessity.

I am aware that for the full development of our fishing industry there is need for further appreciable capital investment and the Deputy may rest assured that any worthwhile project for the industry will have my full support. A number of fishery proposals are at present under consideration for State grant assistance, apart from the major fishery harbours scheme upon which about £1¼ million is to be expended and which is being advanced as quickly as possible.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that in the light of recent happenings in Galway in connection with the fishing industry, it is immediately necessary to replace all Irish ships so that they may be able to compete with the foreign ships?

On ordinary levels?

No, I would not agree with that at all.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that because of the ships available to the Spanish and other Continental fishermen, Irish fishing boats, through no fault of their own, are being out-fished and that, therefore, the situation, such as that which occurred in Galway, has arisen?

I shall be dealing with the question the Deputy is raising in replying to a later question. Perhaps the Deputy would like to wait for that.

I hope the Parliamentary Secretary will deal with the wholesale fishmongers.

He will deal with the questions put to him.
