Vol. 213 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Human Rights Day.

14.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for External Affairs what action was taken by his Department this year in response to the request of the United Nations Organisation that all countries would appropriately mark and observe Human Rights Day; if he is aware of the disappointment of many people that his Department and other public agencies did not suitably observe the day; and if he will ensure that proper attention is given to this day in future years.

It is not the practice of my Department to promote the annual observance of Human Rights Day and I am not aware of any disappointment on the part of the general public that it was not done this year.

The 15th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was suitably observed in 1963 and it is proposed to observe the 20th Anniversary in 1968.
