Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Applications.

108.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applications for telephones at present before his Department; the number waiting over (a) one year, (b) two years, (c) three years and (d) four years; and the number of applications that were before his Department twelve months ago.

The number at 31st December last was 13,215. Of these, the number waiting over 1 year was 4,536, over 2 years 1,237, over 3 years 379 and over 4 years 29. The total number outstanding at the same time last year was 11,617.

109.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (1) the number of applications for telephones in (a) County Roscommon and (b) County Leitrim, (2) how many telephones were installed during 1964 in (a) County Roscommon and (b) County Leitrim, and (3) how many telephones he hopes to have installed during 1965 in each of these counties.

The information requested is as follows:—

1. (a) 116.

(b) 73.

2. (a) 108.

(b) 36.

3. Arrangements are in hand to provide service shortly for about 30 applicants in County Roscommon and for about 10 in County Leitrim. It is not possible to say in relation to particular counties how many telephones will be installed during the remainder of the year but it is expected that the total number of connections will exceed the 1964 figure.

Then it will be four or five years before the list is wiped out?

Not at all. There is still a large amount of trunking work to be done in Leitrim and north Roscommon. The trunking position in south Roscommon is more advanced. Therefore you will not have to wait that length at all.

There is no movement in either north or south Roscommon.
