Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Bog Development.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that following the cutting out of Lyreacrompane Bog, County Kerry, some four years ago, employment was given to Bord na Móna workers on Carrigcannon Bog in the same area; that some 30 to 40 workers were employed on this bog during the production period and about 15 during the winter months; and that most of the staff received notice of termination of employment on 5th February; and if, in view of the fact that some of these workers have up to 20 years' service with Bord na Móna and that turf work is an important local industry, he will make arrangements for the development of other bogland within one mile of the area which was inspected some five years ago but has not yet been developed.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that as the clearing up operations at Lyreacrompane Bog are now finished and no other employment available, it was necessary to give notice of termination of employment on 15th February, 1965, to seven of the 17 men who had been in the Board's employment. These men will be offered re-employment on a seasonal basis towards the end of April. There are, unfortunately, no other bog areas in the locality suitable for economic turf production.

What happened in regard to the bog that was being examined about five years ago?

Having been inspected, it was not regarded as economic.

Would the Minister have it re-examined?

I shall convey the Deputy's request to the Minister for Transport and Power.
