Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - White Paper on Higher Education.

42.

asked the Minister for Education whether his attention has been drawn to a report to the effect that details of the as yet unpublished Irish Government White Paper on Higher Education had been disclosed to a meeting in Trinity College, Dublin by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance; if he will make a statement on the matter; and whether intimation of the Government's decision that each College of the NUI should become completely independent and the Senate of the University be abolished had been conveyed to that University before being so disclosed by the Parliamentary Secretary at the meeting mentioned.

The Commission on Higher Education has not yet reported to me and, accordingly, I have no information as to what recommendations they intend to make. That being so there could be no question of the Government having arrived even at the stage of considering the issue of a White Paper on Higher Education. Accordingly, the remainder of the Deputy's question does not arise.

Mr. Ryan

See the smile on the face of the tiger behind you.
