Vol. 214 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Suburban Railways.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider encouraging a greater use of Dublin suburban railways as a means of relieving traffic congestion; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

CIE are constantly endeavouring to stimulate increased use of the suburban railways by advertisement and other appropriate means. The lower fares on these services should be an inducement and a special survey of requirements is being made bearing in mind changes in the pattern of demand arising from such factors as the five-day week. I do not consider that there are any additional measures of this kind which my Department could usefully take in the matter.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware that in a number of northern seaside resorts, CIE hand out to all the shops for exhibition notices stating the bus times but never make available any timetables showing the train times? Would the Minister not consider that this is showing preference to one form of transport over the other ?

If that is the case, I shall draw attention to it.
