Vol. 215 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untrained Teachers in National Schools.

26.

asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of untrained teachers at present teaching in national schools, and (2) the number of such teachers who have (a) under five years service, (b) five to ten years service, (c) ten to fifteen years service, (d) fifteen to twenty years service, and (e) over twenty years service.

On 30th June, 1964, there were 2,033 untrained teachers serving in national schools.

Of these 890 are junior assistant mistresses who were recruited prior to 1958 when the recruitment of untrained teachers ceased. Of the remainder about 350 are members of religious communities who serve in an untrained capacity for a few years prior to their being called to training.

The records of my Department are not as yet in such form as to enable me readily to give the remaining information requested by the Deputy. If, however, he repeats the question in about one month's time, I will be in a position to do so.
