Vol. 215 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ground Rents.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice if, having regard to the widespread opposition to ground rents and the continuing refusal of ground landlords to sell the rents to occupying tenants, he will indicate when he will introduce legislation to compel ground landlords to permit tenants to acquire the landlords' interests.

Legislation is being prepared to provide for lessees a right to purchase the freehold in their premises. I hope to introduce the necessary legislation before the summer recess.

Would the Minister concede that if the Fianna Fáil Party had adopted a Fine Gael suggestion six years ago to remove this social evil, great benefit would have resulted to the community?

This is entirely irrelevant. The job is now being done.

Six years too late while 10,000 new ground rents have been created.

This is the merest propaganda.

It is perfectly true and the Minister knows it.
