Vol. 215 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Housing.

10.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take action in regard to the derelict sites in Main Street, Daingean, County Offaly; if he is aware that some houses in this town have been condemned for over 17 years and are rat infested and damp; and if suitable action will be taken to (1) clean up the derelict sites and (2) erect houses on them for all those who urgently need houses.

The local county council are the body responsible for taking action in regard both to the clearance of derelict sites and the satisfaction of public housing needs in their area.

I understand that while the council have taken action in relation to some houses in Main Street, Daingean, which were adjudged dangerous the sites in question are not derelict within the meaning of the Derelict Sites Act. I am further informed that the council are negotiating for housing sites in the area.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for the erection of new houses in the town of Edenderry, County Offaly; if he will state (1) when houses were last erected there and how many, (2) the number of persons in the town who need houses, and (3) the number of persons in overcrowded or condemned houses in the town; and what he proposes to do in relation to this serious problem.

I understand from Offaly County Council that there is need for a further scheme of houses in Edenderry. The last scheme, comprising 18 houses, was completed in 1961. It is estimated by the council that there are at least 40 families living in over-crowded conditions. No separate figures are available regarding condemned houses.

I am asking the housing authority to give immediate attention to the formulation of a further scheme.
