asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of coal mining workers, registered as unemployed as a result of redundancy or short time working, who are in receipt of (a) unemployment benefit (b) unemployment assistance or (c) relief from health authority sources, at a convenient date in each of the months January, February and March, 1965.

The following were the total numbers of coal mining workers registered as unemployed on the dates shown:—

29th January, 1965

26th February, 1965

26th March, 1965

Information as to the numbers of these who were in receipt of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance or home assistance is not now available.

The figures for 26th February and 26th March include respectively 248 and 233 workers returned by the local office at Castlecomer as being on short-time and of these 227 and 213 respectively were in receipt of unemployment benefit. The corresponding figures for unemployment assistance were 1 and 2.
