Vol. 215 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pork Export Trade.

55.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the fact that the Pigs and Bacon Commission are at present carrying out a survey of the pork export trade to the USA, it is intended that the Commission will in future be the sole handler of this export trade, or if they will license private firms to operate individually.

I understand that following a survey of the US pork market the Commission have arranged to send some supplies to that market. Registered pork exporters get export licences from my Department subject to compliance with appropriate technical requirements, including the regulations of the US Department of Agriculture in the case of exports to the USA. I am informed that the extent to which the Commission will themselves handle pork exports to the United States will depend on the financial arrangements that can be made by them with individual exporters.
