Vol. 215 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National School Pupils.

80.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of children in national schools and (b) the number of scholarships awarded annually by local authorities to secondary and vocational schools.

The number of children on the rolls of national schools on 30th June, 1964, was 502,201 and the number of post-primary scholarships awarded annually by local authorities is about 2,100.

It will, of course, be appreciated that only a small number of children relative to the total attending national schools fulfil the conditions, including that of age, governing the examination for the award of scholarships.
