Vol. 215 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Gymnasium Facilities.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice what gymnasium facilities are available for the Gardaí; if he has any proposals to extend them: and if he will make a general statement on this matter and on the training of Gardaí for competitive boxing.

There is a gymnasium at Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park and another at the Recruit Training Centre in Templemore which are available to any members of the Force who may wish to avail of them. I have received no request from the Gardaí for an extension of these facilities.

Recruits in training are taught how to defend themselves and are given lessons in boxing for that purpose. While there is no official programme requiring members of the Force to engage in competitive boxing, they are encouraged to take part in all forms of sport, including boxing.
