Vol. 215 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Speed Limits.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has accepted the alterations in speed limits recommended by the Galway County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (Amendment) Regulations made by me on 29th April last were based on the recommendations made by a central team who investigated speed limits on the heavily trafficked arterial routes. That team had regard to the recommendations of the Galway County Council and other local authorities in the county, as well as to the recommendations of the various local technical committees. In a number of instances those local recommendations were adopted either in whole or in part and in other instances the team's recommendations did not agree with the local recommendations.

The main reason why local recommendations were not always adopted was that the recommendations received from the various localities showed wide variations and it was felt that it was desirable to have uniformity, as far as possible, in the application of speed limits on the routes reviewed. The speed limits as applied originally in 1963 had not as great a degree of uniformity and were the subject of criticism on that score.

Could the Minister indicate when he may have a decision on the recommendations by the county council in regard to Galway?

The amending regulations of 29th April would be the latest decision in regard to these recommendations and to the review carried out over the past couple of years.
