Vol. 215 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilronan (Aran) Pier.

54.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the local fishermen are opposed to the extension of Kilronan pier, County Galway, as proposed by the Board of Works; and whether he will take steps to ensure that the best interests of the fishermen are considered in any action taken.

The extension of Kilronan pier, as sponsored by Roinn na Gaeltachta, has been the subject of representations by local fishermen. I am satisfied that in the formulation of this scheme their interests have been given full consideration.

Would the Minister indicate whether, in this consideration, the requirements of the fishermen will be met; that is, an elbow on the pier?

There is a difference of opinion as to which direction the elbow should go. The fishermen suggest it should go in one direction and the Board of Works suggest the other direction.

Is the Minister aware that the other direction is to suit CIE only? The fishermen are the first who should be concerned.

The fishermen were represented by the Fisheries Section of my Department at these discussions. My Department's technicians are satisfied that the provision which is being made is in the best interests of the fishermen.

If the fishermen do not agree with the Minister, who then will have the decision? Why could it not be put to an arbitrator?

We must be guided by the Board of Works experts in these matters.

How many of them have tied up a trawler?

That is a good question.

That is a separate question.

Landlubbers — armchair trawlermen.

The Deputy was never on a boat in his life.

I could bring you for a few trips but you would get seasick.
