Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Films and Plays.

2.

asked the Taoiseach (a) the number of films imported in each of the past three years, (b) the number of plays imported during each of the past three years, and (c) the numbers imported specially for Telefís Éireann.

The only information in respect of the importation of exposed and developed film directly available at the Central Statistics Office relates to the footage of such film imported under the headings specified in the Official Import List. I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving these data. It is not possible to provide particulars of the number of separate "films" imported which are of very varying length and no information is available on the imports of "plays".

It is understood that the aggregate number of "films" imported for Telefís Éireann in period 1 June, 1962 to 31 May, 1965 was 7,367, but it must be noted that the duration of such "films" was very variable. This total includes 124 "feature films", i.e. dramatic films originally made for the cinema, imported and transmitted in the period in question but similar particulars in respect of material made specifically for television are not available.

Following is the statement:—
