Vol. 216 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection against Nuclear Fallout.

55.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the fact that the various types of protective safeguards needed against the effects of nuclear fallout and radiation hazards outlined in the recent Civil Defence booklet Bás Beatha call for heavy personal expenditure; and whether it is his intention to have supplies of such equipment available for the civilian population on the same basis as that obtaining during the emergency.

With the exception of bricks and concrete blocks the items recommended in the booklet "Survival in a Nuclear War. Advice on Protection in the Home and on the Farm" as suitable for use as shielding materials, are all articles or materials which are readily available to most householders and are not likely to involve heavy personal expenditure as suggested by the Deputy. It is not proposed to make supplies of these materials available to householders generally at public expense.
