Vol. 216 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary School.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the growing concern at the delay in starting work on the new national school at Clonoulty, Couny Tipperary; if the contract was placed; if so, when and with whom; when work is likely to commence; and when the school will be ready for occupation; and, if the contract has not been placed, if he will arrange that it be placed with local contractors who are prepared to erect this school with a minimum of delay.

10.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the new national school to be provided at Clonoulty, County Tipperary; and whether the site, water supply and local financial contribution have already been secured.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 and 10 together. The desirability of providing a new school is recognised and a grant towards the cost of the work was sanctioned by the Department of Education in September 1964. A suitable site with an adequate water supply has been secured by the manager who has also undertaken to pay the local contribution. The school is included in a group of twenty-one schools which are to be built under one contract for which tenders will be invited next week. It is expected to have a contract placed towards the end of August and a period of twelve months will be allowed for the completion of all the schools included in the contract. It is not considered that any advantage in terms of cost or time for completion would be secured by excluding this case from the proposed group contract and having tenders invited for it separately.

Am I to take it that this school is included in a group of 21 which has been handed over to one contractor——

——and that the Parliamentary Secretary is now giving an assurance that the 21 schools will be completed within 12 months?

That is the time allowed under the contract for which tenders will be invited next week.

Do I understand that these schools are being built by the National Building Agency, as such?

No, tenders are being invited.
