Vol. 216 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois-Offaly Water and Sewerage Schemes.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that no water has been provided for the residents of many houses at Conoboro, Edenderry, County Offaly; and if he will have this matter investigated as soon as possible in view of the urgent demand of the people living in this area for water for domestic and general use.

I understand that there is an existing public water main in Conoboro, to which the occupiers may connect their houses if they so desire. The usual grants from both the Department and the county council are available for such work.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he proposes to take any action against Offaly County Council for their failure to provide a water supply for domestic and other use to six county council cottages at Ballyduff, Tullamore, County Offaly where housewives and children have no means of obtaining clean water; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I understand that consultations are taking place between officials of Offaly County Council and Tullamore Urban District Council on the question of supplying this and other fringe areas from the town supply.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give early approval to the regional water supply scheme for the area of Doonane, Crettyard, County Laois; and if he will give every possible assistance to the provision of this service so that work will be commenced as a matter of special urgency.

No proposal has been submitted for a regional water supply, but a group water scheme to serve approximately 75 houses is proposed for the area. So far as my Department is concerned, there will be no undue delay in dealing with the matter.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give immediate approval to the proposal of Laois County Council to extend the sewerage scheme in Portarlington; and if this work will be undertaken without delay.

There is no proposal to extend the Portarlington sewerage scheme awaiting sanction in my Department. The appointment of a consulting engineer was sanctioned last week.
