Vol. 216 No. 6

Private Notice Question. - Cessation of Public Transport Services.

asked the Taoiseach if in view of the serious hardship caused to the public by the present cessation of public transport services, he will indicate what steps the Government propose to take to alleviate such hardship and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As on the occasion of previous stoppage of bus services, arrangements are being made to provide free transport, by Army lorries, for workers living in housing estates on the outskirts of Dublin and Cork, to and from the city centres. Details of these arrangements will be announced in the Press. It is hoped to commence these services on Friday next.

The Ministers for Social Welfare and Health are arranging for the relaxation of regulations to facilitate the payment of old age pensions and similar social payments. The Minister for Education has made arrangements to facilitate the holding of examinations due at this time.

In the event of the stoppage of bus services continuing, consideration will be given to other possible methods of reducing the public inconvenience resulting therefrom.
