Vol. 216 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Petrol.

17.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will initiate discussions with the petrol distributing companies, with a view to achieving a reduction in the current price of petrol.

As there has been no increase in the distributing companies' price for petrol since 1958, apart from increases due to taxation, and as the companies have, in fact, reduced their petrol prices on four occasions since then, I have no grounds for action on the lines suggested by the Deputy.

Is there any element of competition at all in the price of petrol in the country?

On the road I travel I see advertisements that certain amounts of money are taken off the gallon, so there must be some competition.

Mr. Barrett
