asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of societies the registration of which was cancelled by the Registrar of Friendly Societies within the last year, and the reasons for cancellation.

20.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of (a) limited companies, and (b) friendly societies.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 19 and 20 together.

There were 11,734 limited companies and 160 friendly societies registered at 31st December, 1964. The total number of societies of all classes, including friendly societies, whose registration was cancelled during the year ended 31st May, 1965, was 41. Of these, 12 were cancelled for failure to furnish returns, ten as having ceased to exist, and the remaining 19 following amalgamation, conversion to companies, voluntary winding up or dissolution. These figures of cancellation include six friendly societies, one cancelled for failure to furnish returns and five as having ceased to exist.
