Vol. 216 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cashel Chemical Pulp Industry.

34.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider the establishment of a chemical pulp industry at Cashel, County Tipperary to utilise the thinnings from local forests.

The question of the utilisation of forest thinnings is under constant review and will form part of a larger examination by consultants which is being arranged by the Industrial Development Authority and the Department of Lands. I am informed that the present and potential demand by the existing industrial users of thinnings is such that there would be insufficient raw materials available for some years to come for the establishment of a chemical pulp mill on an economic basis.

The choice of location for such a mill would of course be governed by many factors of a technical and economic nature.
