Vol. 217 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Housing.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the appalling conditions under which approved applicants for cottages in Ardfinnan and Newcastle, County Tipperary, are living; and that those people are on the approved list for a considerable length of time; and if there is any hope of their being rehoused in the near future.

I am informed by the housing authority that ten approved applicants in Ardfinnan and four in Newcastle are living in overcrowded conditions or in unfit dwellings, and that some of them are awaiting re-housing for considerable periods. As I indicated in my reply to the Deputy's question of the 18th May last, the county council were having difficulty in obtaining suitable housing sites in these areas. I understand that they have now selected sites for about 30 houses in Ardfinnan and five in Newcastle and propose to institute compulsory purchase proceedings for their acquisition.

37.

asked the Minister for Local Government to what extent the housing requirements of Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, have been met; and what are the future housing requirements there.

I am informed that the housing authority have not yet completed an overall assessment of the present and future housing needs of the town. It is estimated, however, that about 60 more local authority houses are needed at present. Two houses are under construction, schemes comprising 56 houses are at tender stage, and sites are on hands or are being acquired for 28 houses.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government to what extent the housing requirements of Tipperary town have been met; and what are the future housing requirements there.

I am informed by the housing authority that an overall assessment of the present and future housing needs of the town has not yet been made. It is estimated, however, that about 43 more local authority houses are needed at present.

Eight houses are under construction, a tender for 12 houses has been accepted and sites are on hands or are being acquired for a further 46 council houses, and about 30 private sites.
