Vol. 217 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North-West University.

1.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Taoiseach if he will state whether, arising out of his meeting with Captain O'Neill, consideration was given at these talks to the desirability of founding a university in the North-West jointly subsidised by the two Governments.

I outlined the subject matter of my talks with Captain O'Neill in my reply to questions addressed to me in this House on 10th February last. I have nothing to add to that reply.

Mr. O'Leary

Would the Taoiseach not agree that this is a suitable matter for discussion between the two Governments? He is doubtless aware that 15,000 signatures have been collected in Derry in protest against the siting of the new university in Coleraine. The Northern Ireland Labour Party and other groups in Stormont have raised this question. His colleague, the Minister for Local Government, will tell him about the depressed state of that part of the country. It would be in the interests of the north-western area if such a university could be sited in Derry——

The Deputy is making a long speech, not asking a question.

Mr. O'Leary

——and the Stormont Government might reconsider the siting of the university.

Mr. O'Malley

The university should be in Limerick.
