Vol. 217 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Council Scholarships.

47.

asked the Minister for Education if any steps can be taken to restore the eligibility for county council scholarship of children of up to fourteen years of age since that age is not too old for rural children who start school at six years and for whom long distances and bad weather conditions constitute a severe handicap, and since the lower age limit has taken away the only chance of many of these children of receiving a higher education.

I am satisfied that the present age limits, 11 to 13 years on 1st April, are equitable and educationally desirable. I do not, therefore, propose to alter them.
