Vol. 217 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untrained National Teachers.

48.

asked the Minister for Education whether, further to a reply of 11th May, regarding the position of untrained national teachers, a proposal that untrained teachers with 15 years' service be put on the trained scale was put forward by the teachers' organisation to the conciliation and arbitration machinery; whether such claim was rejected by the Department; and, if so, what were the reasons for the Department's opposition to such claim.

49.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider instituting a scheme of short summer courses for training of untrained national teachers, particularly those with a number of years of practical teaching experience, which would qualify them to become officially trained teachers.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 48 and 49 together.

As I have stated in reply to similar questions recently, claims affecting untrained teachers are being dealt with at present under the National Teachers Conciliation and Arbitration Scheme and I am therefore precluded from making a statement on the matters raised in these questions.
