Vol. 217 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ask for a special report in regard to the general outcry in the Ballybrittas area, County Laois because of his order removing the 40 miles per hour speed limit; and if he will reconsider his decision in this matter and restore the speed limit as a matter of urgency in the interests of public safety.

The recent regulations sought to provide for a more uniform and reasonable approach to the application of speed limits on the heavily trafficked arterial routes and were based on the results of a survey carried out by a central team. Under these regulations a number of very small villages including Ballybrittas were removed from the scope of the speed limits. The case in question will be reviewed in connection with a further survey which is now in progress.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that since the erection of houses in the Casement and Plunkett area of Finglas West, Dublin there have been eight serious accidents involving young children on the North Road which adjoins the area referred to, one of which was fatal; and if he will now arrange with the appropriate authority to have the speed limit of 30 miles per hour extended a further half mile on the North Road approaching Finglas from County Dublin.

The speed limit on the North Road, Finglas, has been extended to a point 50 yards north-west of Plunkett Avenue since 1st July last.
