Vol. 217 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Joint Labour Committees.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that considerable unrest exists among workers whose wages and conditions are governed by Joint Labour Committees, having regard to the long delay in implementing the decisions of these Committees which is occasioned by the statutory procedures governing them; and if he will arrange for the immediate introduction of amending legislation which will reduce the long waiting period experienced and enable such Joint Labour Committees to afford the workers concerned a reasonable measure of retrospective payment.

I do not think that separate amending legislation would be justified but I will have the matter fully considered in the course of my general review of the industrial relations legislation now in progress.

I would ask the Minister to give more consideration to the matter because there is undoubtedly tremendous unrest in relation to this matter. When we are thinking in terms of approaching proper industrial relations, this is one of the matters requiring attention.

It is a very small point in industrial relations legislation.

A very small point?

It is not unreasonable for any adjustment in the waiting period here to await an overall review of industrial relations.

There are thousands of people involved in this.

I am not talking about the number of people affected. I am talking legislation-wise.
