Vol. 217 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Post Office.

75.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in respect of the post office at Shannon Airport the annual loss thereon; the proportion of business in (a) stamp sales (b) telegrams and (c) other services; whether he has under consideration the introduction of economies to reduce the losses; and, if so, the nature thereof.

The volume of business at Shannon Airport Post Office in 1964-65 was: (a) stamp sales, £57,000 (b) telegrams, £3,700 (c) other services, £97,000 (excluding telephone account payments).

The office is open for 24 hours a day and staff charges etc. are therefore higher than usual. Economies can be achieved only by reducing the facilities available to airline passengers and other users of the office. The considerations involved in any such step are under examination in consultation with the Department of Transport and Power who repay to my Department the exceptional additional operating costs. For 1964-65 these costs are calculated at £16,641. 11s. 6d.
