andMr. J.J. Collins asked the Minister for Education the amount of State funds expected to be spent on new buildings, and on alterations or extensions to present buildings, provision of equipment etc., for institutions of higher education in (a) Dublin, (b) Cork, (c) Galway, and (d) Limerick during the present year and in the near future.

84.

asked the Minister for Education if any steps are being taken, or are contemplated, by his Department or any other State agency for the acquisition of sites with a view to the expansion and extension of facilities for higher education throughout the country.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the school years ended 1935 and 1945, and 1955 to 1965 inclusive the number of students enrolled at (a) primary schools (b) secondary schools (c) vocational schools (i) whole-time and (ii) part-time (d) UCD, UCC, UCG and Trinity College and (e) other institutions of higher education.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the years 1935 and 1945 and 1955 to 1965 inclusive for (1) vocational schools, and (2) universities and other institutions of higher education (a) the number built (b) the number renovated or extended (c) the total number in existence (d) the estimated cost to the State of new buildings and extensions and (e) in respect of (2) the estimated cost to the College authorities of new buildings and extensions.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the years ending 1935 and 1945 and 1955 to 1965 inclusive (1) the cost per annum to the State for each student at (a) primary schools (b) secondary schools and (c) vocational schools (i) whole-time and (ii) part-time and (d) universities and (e) other institutions of higher education; (2) the total cost to the State of education and (3) the percentage of all Government expenditure spent on education.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the most recent date for which figures are available the number of students from (a) Dublin city and environs, (b) Cork city and environs, (c) Galway city and environs, (d) Limerick city and environs, and (e) within a 30 mile radius of (i) Dublin, (ii) Cork, (iii) Galway, and (iv) Limerick, who are attending (i) primary schools in the area (ii) full time vocational schools in the area, (iii) secondary schools in the area, (iv) University College, Dublin, (v) University College, Cork, (vi) University College, Galway, (vii) Trinity College, Dublin, and (viii) The Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians, and (ix) part-time University courses.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students from Counties Clare, Limerick and Tipperary who are following full-time courses, in (a) University College, Dublin (b) University College, Cork (c) University College, Galway and (d) Trinity College, Dublin.

asked the Minister for Education the number of full-time students (a) undergraduate and (b) postgraduate in each faculty in (1) University College, Dublin (2) University College, Cork (3) University College, Galway and (d) Trinity College, Dublin.

asked the Minister for Education the numbers of professors and lecturers appointed to University College, Dublin, University College, Cork, University College, Galway, and Trinity College, Dublin during the past three years.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of boys, (b) the number of girls and (c) the total number from secondary schools who passed the leaving certificate examination in each of the school years 1954 to 1964 inclusive from secondary schools (1) in and (2) within a 30 miles radius of (i) Dublin, (ii) Cork, (iii) Galway and (iv) Limerick.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of (1) University College, Dublin, (2) University College, Cork, (3) University College, Galway and (4) Trinity College, Dublin, for each of the academic years ended 1935 and 1945 and 1955 to 1965 inclusive (1) the number of (a) whole-time and (b) part-time students from (i) the Republic, (ii) Northern Ireland and (iii) outside Ireland, (2) the cost to State funds of each student in each of these categories, (3) the annual subvention from State funds to each college, and (4) the basis on which it is paid.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of (1) University College, Dublin (2) University College, Cork, (3) University College, Galway and (4) Trinity College, Dublin (a) the total number of students, and (b) the total number of staff under the following headings: (i) professors (ii) lecturers (iii) assistants, demonstrators, etc, and (iv) non-teaching staff and (c) the ratio of teaching staff to students in respect of each of the years 1934-35, 1954-55, 1959-60 and the latest year for which statistics are available.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the years 1935 and 1945 and 1955 to 1965 for (1) primary schools and (2) secondary schools (a) the number built (b) the number renovated or extended (c) the total number in existence and (d) the estimated cost to the State of new buildings and extensions; and if he will state in respect of each of these years in respect of secondary schools the estimated cost to secular and religious owners of new buildings and extensions.

(4) Annual grants are paid by the Department of Education for the general purposes of the university colleges in each financial year. The amounts of such grants are determined after examination of the proposals submitted by the authorities of each college for the year in question.

Annual grants are provided by the Department of Agriculture for the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and General Agriculture, University College, Dublin, School of Veterinary Medicine, Trinity College, Dublin, and the Faculty of Dairy Science, University College, Cork.

Secondary Schools

(a) and (b): From the information available to me it is not possible to state the number of secondary schools built, renovated or extended during the years in question.

(d) The capitation grants payable to secondary schools contain an element of capital contribution towards building costs. Since, however, within these grants no particular amount is earmarked in relation to the element concerned, it is not possible to furnish the information sought by the Deputies.

It is not possible, from the information available to furnish the information sought by the Deputies in the latter part of the question.
