Vol. 217 No. 8

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Priorities.

19.

asked the Minister for Local Government on what medical grounds priority is given by the Dublin Corporation in the matter of providing housing accommodation.

Dublin Corporation, in common with other housing authorities, are required to allocate the tenancies of their dwellings in accordance with the provisions of the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations, 1950 and 1953, made by the Minister for Local Government in exercise of powers conferred on him by the Housing (Amendment) Acts, 1948 to 1952. These regulations prescribe the preference to be given, wherever practicable, to different classes of applicants and provide an early preference for persons with a family living in overcrowded conditions, or in a one-roomed dwelling, where one or more than one member of the family is suffering from tuberculosis. The regulations also provide that, for the purpose of determining the order of priority within a class of applicants, the housing authority shall obtain and have regard to a report and recommendation from the chief medical officer. The criteria to be observed by the medical officer in preparing this report are not prescribed.
