asked the Minister for Justice the proportion of prisoners who are (i) first offenders (ii) offenders for a second time and (iii) offenders more than twice.

Based on the particulars of persons, other than surety, debtor and contempt of court prisoners, committed to prisons on conviction in 1964, the information sought is as follows: (1) 31.5 per cent; (2) 12.5 per cent and (3) 56 per cent.

In the case of youthful offenders sentenced to detention in St. Patrick's Institution, the corresponding figures are (1) 76.5 per cent; (2) 15.5 per cent; and (3) 8 per cent.
