Vol. 217 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - TV Licence Prosecutions.

44.

asked the Minister for Justice how many people have been summoned for the non-purchase of TV licences since January 1965; how many were fined; how many cases were dismissed; what was the total amount of all fines; and whether the arrangements made were sufficient to enable the District Courts to deal with all cases.

The total number of prosecutions in the period from 1st January, 1965, to 30th June, 1965 for non-possession of TV licences was 1,770. Of these fines were imposed in 518 cases and ten were dismissed. The total amount of all fines imposed was £1,428 0s. 0d.

With regard to the last part of the question, the arrangements made for the hearing of these summonses are matters for the district justice concerned or, in the case of the Dublin Metropolitan District, the President of the District Court. I have had no complaints that the arrangements were not sufficient to enable the cases to be dealt with adequately.
