Vol. 217 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thomas Davis Statue.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance when the statue of Thomas Davis will be erected in College Green, Dublin; the reason for the delay to date; and the estimated cost of completing the work.

As I indicated in my introductory statement on the Estimate for Public Works and Buildings last month, the memorial to Thomas Davis will be erected in College Green inside the next 12 months. The plaster model of the statue is at present being cast in bronze. The statue will be erected on a paved platform measuring about 55 feet by 18 feet, 9 inches high which will also contain a circular pool embellished with bronze reliefs depicting Young Ireland. The contract for the architectural work has been placed and the contractor has in hands the preparation of the stonework prior to making a start on the site.

A project of this nature cannot be hurried and progress with it is in fact quite satisfactory. The estimated cost of the entire scheme is £15,000.
