Vol. 217 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garden of Remembrance.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance when the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square, Dublin, will be completed; the reasons for the delay to date; and the estimated cost of completing the work.

The main construction work in the Garden of Remembrance has been completed except for the improvement of the approach along the eastern side of Parnell Square which is at present in hands and which it is expected will be completed in the Autumn.

Apart from some difficulties which were encountered in obtaining supplies of dressed stone progress with the scheme has been satisfactory.

Excluding the memorial sculpture, a design for which has still to be decided on, the estimated cost of the scheme is £166,000.

Pending the provision of the central sculptural feature, which must of necessity take a considerable time even if a suitable design were immediately available it has been decided, as a temporary measure, that a fountain in the form of a tall jet should be installed on the site of the feature. Arrangements for the execution of this work are in train and it will it is hoped be completed in the next few months.
