Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civilian Apprentices in Haulbowline Dockyard.

49.

andMr. Burton asked the Minister for Defence if his Department will consider accepting civilian apprentices to the various trades in the Naval Dockyard, Haulbowline, County Cork because, if not, these various trades (boilermaker, fitter, joiner, moulder, pattern-maker, rigger, shipwright, blacksmith etc.) will become obsolete and this would create a serious problem.

The question of the acceptance of civilian apprentices to the various trades in the Naval Dockyard has been fully and carefully considered. I regret, however, that the introduction of a civilian apprenticeship scheme in the dockyard would not be feasible at the present time.
