Vol. 217 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Siting of Irish Industry.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce with reference to a report (details supplied) that an Irish industry may site its future expansion outside the State because of housing and other difficulties experienced here, if he will ensure that steps will be taken to avoid the loss to Ireland of such industrial expansion; what assistance will be given to the company to overcome the difficulties; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the report referred to by the Deputy. The provision of adequate housing and services is largely a matter for the local authorities concerned, and I am informed that, in the case referred to, the local authorities have recently been in touch with the firm concerned and communicated to it the development plans for the town in question. Should the firm feel that the plans for new housing are not enough for the needs of its employees, the National Building Agency, whose services have recently been extended, would be ready to be of assistance.

Having regard to the danger, in the event of delay, of the industry going elsewhere, can the Minister use his good offices with the National Building Agency and/or the Minister for Local Government and/or the local authorities to ensure that housing is supplied well in advance so as to prevent that undesirable development?

The local Deputies have already been active in this matter and they have been made aware of the availability of the services of the National Building Agency.
