Vol. 218 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shipment of Cattle from Derry Port.

25.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make enquiries from the Northern Ireland Authorities regarding the future of Derry Port in relation to the shipment of cattle from it, in view of the fact that this Port is at present available to Donegal exporters.

I am not clear as to what the Deputy has in mind. If he would send me further particulars I will consider whether there is any point which could usefully be discussed with the appropriate Ministry in Northern Ireland.

That is exactly what I am asking the Minister to do. Will he make inquiries in Northern Ireland himself, or does he want me to do his work for him?

I have not that information.

A Fianna Fáil councillor in Donegal who is in a very good position to get information from the Government has stated publicly at a council meeting in Lifford that cattle shipments from Derry would cease. Surely the Minister should make inquiries and not ask me to do his work for him?

I would need a great deal of information from all the agricultural interests. The Minister for Agriculture has received no representations in regard to difficulties in connection with shipments of cattle.

The Minister has no knowledge of it at all?

I have no knowledge of it.

In other words, the Fianna Fáil councillor was flying a kite—like other Fianna Fáil representatives, he was flying a kite.
