Vol. 218 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Special Employment Schemes Office.

50.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will make a statement on any probable future plans for the Special Employment Schemes Office.

The position of the Special Employment Schemes Office is at present under review but I am not yet in a position to make a statement on the matter.

51.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the total allocation of money to the Special Employment Schemes Office for the year ending March 1966, and (b) what portion of this money is allocated to County Galway.

The total allocation for 1965/66 for the schemes administered by the Special Employment Schemes Office, omitting the administrative subheads, is £831,000, of which approximately £95,250 is being allocated to schemes in County Galway.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that a new departure has been embarked upon by the Special Employment Schemes Office where they have undertaken to carry out a scheme in consideration of a local contribution, that on that local contribution being lodged, they are now asking local people for a supplementary contribution and that in one case in County Monaghan, the local people having collected and lodged £121 at the request of the Special Employment Schemes Office, they are now informed that unless and until they lodge a further £30 the Office is not prepared to proceed with the scheme?

I assure the Deputy no such departure has taken place.

And if what I stated has been done, have I the Parliamentary Secretary's assurance that it will be cancelled?

The Deputy has the Parliamentary Secretary's assurance that the case will be examined if I am given the particulars.

In view of the Parliamentary Secretary's assurance, may I take it the case I have in mind will be cancelled?

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give the comparative figures for last year, in relation to the original reply?

I do not know what comparative figures the Deputy wants.

What was the total allocation for last year?

For County Galway?

I do not know: ask Deputy Coogan.

Surely this is not relevant.

I think it is. The question is there.

But the supplementary question does not relevantly arise. Is the House agreeable that we should conclude the questions to the Minister for Finance?

Could the Ceann Comhairle say that the balance of questions, plus those put down for tomorrow, will be finished by 5 o'clock?

They will be taken tomorrow. We shall go on until we finish them.
