Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Infectious Diseases and Disabled Persons Maintenance Allowances.

191.

asked the Minister for Health if, in order to guarantee weekly payments of infectious diseases maintenance allowances and disability allowances to those applicants entitled to them, he will cause books such as those issued to old age pensioners to be issued to those persons and thus ensure weekly payment of the amount due.

Mr. O'Malley

Arrangements for the payment of infectious diseases maintenance allowances and disabled persons maintenance allowances are a matter for the various health authorities.

I understand that most authorities make payments weekly or fortnightly and that in general recipients of these allowances find this arrangement satisfactory. As I assume the Deputy's question may have particular reference to Donegal, I have had inquiries made from the health authority. I am informed that the Donegal Health Authority issue monthly payable orders to the recipients, and that there are very few complaints about this method of payment. I am also informed that the council about two years ago discussed the possibility of paying the allowances more frequently, and decided that no change should be made. As I think more frequent payment should be made, I am requesting the health authority to consider the issue of these payable orders weekly, or at least fortnightly.
