Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of Disabled Persons Allowance.

192.

asked the Minister for Health if he will explain why the disabled persons allowance was with-drawn from a person (name and address supplied); if he is aware of the disability of this young man and the financial circumstances of the family; and if he will make an order for a reallocation of disabled persons allowance.

Mr. O'Malley

The determination of eligibility for a disabled persons allowance is, by law, reserved to the local health authority concerned; I am not empowered to vary any such decision and neither do I have details of particular cases. I have, however, made inquiries from the responsible health authority regarding the person named by the Deputy and I understand that, while he would still be regarded as eligible on medical grounds for an allowance, the financial circumstances of his household have improved since his case was last reviewed and that accordingly he is no longer regarded by the health authority as eligible on grounds of means.
