Vol. 218 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Housing Subsidy.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total annual subsidy payable on local authority housing to (1) County Councils and (2) Borough and Urban areas; the amount he estimates will be saved, when the present Housing Bill becomes law, by withdrawal of subsidy on purchase by county council tenants; and the amount of increase in annuity it is estimated will result (a) per non-municipal or village-type house and (b) per labourer's cottage.

The total annual amount of State subsidy on local authority housing varies from year to year. In 1964-65 subsidy amounting to £886,478 was paid to county councils while £1,647,726 was paid to borough and urban authorities.

Terms for the sale of dwellings in accordance with the provisions of the Housing Bill, 1965, have not yet been finalised. I am not, therefore, in a position to answer the latter part of the Deputy's question. He will note, however, that under the Bill existing tenants of labourers' cottages and tenants appointed to new cottages within six months of the coming into operation of the relevant provisions will have adequate opportunities of purchasing their cottages in accordance with the provisions of the Labourers Act, 1936.
