Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has caused inquiries to be made into the payment of a housing grant in respect of a premises (address given); and if he is satisfied that the present owner (name given) was entitled to the grant.

The facts of the case in question have been investigated. Payment of a housing grant to the present owner is not permissible under the law governing such grants.

Is the Minister aware that the applicant in this case received a communication from his Department on 26th July saying that a grant had in fact been paid in respect of the premises and that further, on some day in August, an undated letter was sent to me and when I inquired about the name of the grantee, I was told that the sum of £275 was paid to a Mr. Denis C. Murphy? The sum of £140 was paid on 6/11/'56 and of £135 on 24/8/'57. Could the Minister explain why wrong information of this nature was given and how the mistake arose?
