Vol. 218 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly House Rents.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the unreasonable increases which were made last week in the rents of recently erected houses at Cappaneal, Birr, County Offaly by Birr Urban District Council; and that in one case rent has been increased from 22/- per week to 37/- per week with rates extra, and in another case from 37/- per week to 40/- per week; and if, in view of the fact that all the houses are similar and have as yet to be finally completed to the satisfaction of the tenants, he will cause an investigation to be made without delay with a view to reducing these rents and to ensuring that similar increases do not take place again in regard to these houses or similar houses which are the property of Birr Urban Council.

I understand that the adjustments in rent, to which the Deputy refers, were made in accordance with the graded rents scheme adopted by Birr Urban District Council and approved by me. It would be a matter for the housing authority to propose any alteration in the approved scheme.
