Vol. 218 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco Supplies.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has taken steps to obtain, or has rendered assistance to the tobacco industry to obtain, supplies of tobacco alternative to supplies from Rhodesia in view of the present unsettled state of that country; and if in view of uneasiness in the tobacco industry he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any uneasiness in the tobacco industry concerning supplies of tobacco. None of the tobacco manufacturers have indicated that they expect to have difficulty in obtaining supplies of tobacco. The question of any action on my part as envisaged by the Deputy does not, therefore, arise.

The Minister has no doubt seen reports that in the event of certain developments in Rhodesia, supplies of tobacco from that country will be cut off. Having regard to the fact that a substantial proportion of the raw material for our tobacco industry comes from that country, does the Minister not feel he has a duty now to seek alternative sources in order to ensure the continuation of supply?

It is a very small proportion, 3.7 per cent, which can easily be replaced, but the tobacco manufacturers have not evidenced any uneasiness. They are the people who are concerned.

Some of them are using more than 3.4 per cent.

3.7 per cent is the total.
