Vol. 218 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill Landing Facilities.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when it was decided to start work at Darby's Point, County Mayo on the provision of the proposed landing facilities.

This matter is under consideration in the light of engineering advice which was recently received in my Department.

When may we expect some sort of decision in this matter having regard to the fact that the Minister for Justice in his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary visited the place and said "When there are so many boats there you will get the pier"? The boats are there now at the moment. Recently, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Gaeltacht went there. He was described as having got out of his car, looked into the water, got back again and driven away. How long are you going to continue to fool the people of that area about this? Are you serious about it at all? Are we to expect anything in the current Estimate for it? If not, I would ask the Minister to be straightforward about it and say "We will not do anything about it until the next Estimate comes in because we have not the money now and will not do it."

The position is that fish landings here are going up and we are all pleased about that. We are anxious to provide the facilities to which the Deputy refers, but it seems that a boring survey by the OPW will probably be necessary and various other engineering requirements met before we can decide on precisely what to do.

Seven to four the boring will start before the next election.
